Tennessee Will Receive $82.2 Million Towards Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

Memphis-area Rep. Steve Cohen (R-TN-09) announced on Wednesday that Tennessee will receive $82.2 million towards the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which is administered through the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In a statement made to The Tennessee Star, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN-02) said, “It’s a shame the Democrats’ reckless spending and war on domestic energy production is causing our energy prices to skyrocket. More East Tennesseans will be dependent on these funds this year because the Biden administration’s policies caused a problem that was avoidable from the start.”

The Biden administration announced on Tuesday that it will be spending $4.5 billion on heating, cooling, and weatherization services for households throughout the United States, claiming that it is needed for low-income families this winter and that it will cut back on pollution.

“In addition to lowering costs, energy-efficient and electric building and appliance upgrades can reduce indoor and local outdoor air pollution, improving health in our communities. In addition, they will cut millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year to help tackle climate change,” according to the White House.

Since Biden took office in 2021, his energy policies have cost the U.S. economy $100 billion a year, but Biden continues to blame the oil and gas industry for higher energy prices and lower supply, calling them to work with his administration to bring down pricing.

A report by Joseph Toomey, however, argues that energy inflation is due to the “climate extremism” that is being pushed by the Biden administration and is affecting American consumers.

Democrats such as Rep. Cohen say they believe that these taxpayer funds are needed in order for Americans to cover the cost of their heating and cooling bills.

“LIHEAP serves millions of households, including many in Memphis, with covering the cost of heating, cooling, and weatherization services. This funding will help many families stay safe and warm this winter while creating good-paying jobs for those providing these critical services,” Cohen said.
